Root canal Treatment
A root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage inside a tooth while preserving the tooth itself. The process typically involves the following steps:
Diagnosis and X-Ray
- The dentist examines the affected tooth and takes an X-ray to assess the extent of infection or damage.
- Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area and ensure a pain-free procedure.
Tooth Isolation
- A rubber dam (a thin sheet) is placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free from saliva during treatment.
Pulp Removal and Cleaning
- The dentist drills a small access hole in the tooth to reach the infected or damaged pulp (soft tissue inside the tooth).
- The infected pulp, bacteria, and debris are removed using special dental instruments.
- The root canals are cleaned and shaped properly to prepare them for filling.
Disinfection and Medication
- The cleaned canals are disinfected to eliminate bacteria.
- Sometimes, a medication is placed inside to kill any remaining infection before sealing the tooth.
Filling the Root Canals
- Once the infection is cleared, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material (usually gutta-percha) to prevent reinfection.
- The access hole is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
Crown Placement (if needed)
- In most cases, a dental crown is placed over the tooth to restore its strength and function, especially for molars or weak teeth.
Aftercare & Recovery
- Mild discomfort or sensitivity may be experienced for a few days.
- The dentist may prescribe pain relievers or antibiotics if needed.
- Good oral hygiene and follow-up visits ensure proper healing.
